Repatriation

Even though officially on 30th June 2007 the UNHCR organized repatriation exercise for Liberian refugees ended, repatriation remains a major focus of the Commission. Since October 2oo4, LRRRC has been collaborating with UNHCR and other partners to return the scattered population.

As of 31st December 2007, a total of157,755 Liberian refugees have returned. Of this number, 112,256 were assisted to return through the UNHCR organized repatriation programme; while 45, 499 of the refugees returned on their own. Presently, 75,509 Liberian refugees continue to be in countries of asylum within the West African Sub – region.

In order to address the problem of the residual caseload, LRRRC is
partnering and consulting with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to dispatch a vessel to countries of asylum to assist the refugees return to contribute their individual quota to Liberia’s  recovery process.
