Protection
The Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) is mandated to protect refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and other persons of humanitarian concern. As part of the peace building process, this protection even extends into the issue of land dispute resolution. Throughout the counties, LRRRC Reintegration Officers along with other partners act as mediators in land dispute cases. Those cases that cannot be settled outside of the legal system, the Commission provides
legal representation.
As part of its protection function, the Commission consists of the Asylum and Appeals Committee. The Asylum Committee comprised the Ministry of Justice, Planning, Internal Affairs, and chaired by LRRRC. The Committee functions as a gateway to receive asylum seeker’s application, review, analyst and determine whether or not an applicant is qualified to be granted a refugee status under the Geneva Convention of 28 July 1951. If an applicant does not meet the criteria and therefore denied, he or she can take an appeal to the Appeals Committee for review and action. Again, if he or she can not be given such status, an applicant can still send an appeal to the Supreme Court which has the final verdict.
